Анализ "A Canary For One" by Ernest Hemingway

The story under the title "A Canary for One" was written by one of the most famous writers of the 20th century – Ernest Hemingway.

The story begins with the description of the train going to Paris and the passengers in it. They are the main characters: the American lady with her canary, and a man with his wife. The plot of the story is quite simple – the passengers traveling to Paris in the same compartment have a common and easy conversation while the trip, and finally part reaching their destination. Though it seems quite a usual thing, lots of facts prove the story to be one of the great works of Hemingway’s genius.

Let’s begin with the protagonist of the story – the American lady. The author doesn’t even mention her name as it’s unnecessary. In the whole story there are no names at all. What we know of her – she is a bit deaf and has a daughter. No mentioning her husband. So we may guess for the time being she has no husband at all, or his existence is so unimportant for her. This is the first sign of her loneliness.

What concerns her daughter, it’s well-known that she was madly in love with a Swiss fellow, but it turned out they parted. No explanations, just a fact. The American lady kept on saying that American men make the best husbands. It is possible that the mother didn’t let her daughter marry her Swiss boyfriend, as he belonged to the “wrong” nationality, not the American. So she took the canary for her girl as a present – perhaps to console her sufferings and torments. That little canary singing so beautifully – was a solace for the girl who lost her love ...

The semi-autobiographical novel is about an idealistic young honors college graduate who becomes an English teacher, hoping to share her love of classic literature (especially Chaucer) and writing with her students. However, her idealism is quickly snuffed out by the gritty realities of her colleagues and students who populate the novel's fictional inner-city high school.

Her novel was translated into 16 languages, and has since sold 6.5 million copies. In 1967, the story was made into a film starring Sandy Dennis, and in 1977 it became a play. She has also published numerous short stories and magazine articles.

Анализ "Dangerous Corner" by John Priestley

The text under the title "Dangerous Corner" was written by British journalist, novelist, playwright, and essayist – John Boynton Priestley (1894-1984). Priestley's output was vast and varied - he wrote over one hundred novels, plays, and essays, and is best known as the author of the novel THE GOOD COMPANIONS (1929). A man of versatility, he was a patriot, cosmopolitan Yorkshireman, professional amateur, cultured Philistine, reactionary radical, and a common-sense spokesman for the ordinary man-in-the-street. Priestley refused both knighthood and peerage, but accepted in 1977 the prestigious Order of Merit.

The text under the study is a play. The society of several men and women sitting in a cosy drawing-room and idly discussing the wireless lay they have just heard is described in the plot. Initially the conversation goes around the play but gradually it approaches the theme of truth and lie.

It turns out that only Robert is sure truth has always to be said, the rest come to think that people are likely to lie and often they do so undeliberately. Here we observe the problem of the play – the author assumes mankind applies lies uncautiously and this causes lots of handicaps and troubles in life.

People forget that keeping falsehood as a habit is considered as bad manners. The neat comparison of truth with the sleeping dog gives the play excitement and vividness. Indeed, when letting the truth out we can do more harm to ourselves, sometimes not comparable with the lie.

Анализ "Thursday Evening" by Christopher Morley

The text under consideration is called "Thursday Evening" written by Christopher Morley. The scene is set in the small kitchen of the modest suburban home of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Johns. A meal has recently been cooked and Laura has served a dinner for four persons as both grandmothers are visiting. Laura and Gordon are in good humour at first but every time one or the other refers to his or her own mother the atmosphere becomes tense.

A fierce conflict breaks out between Laura and Gordon when he begins hunting for the plate with a lot of perfectly good stuff he saved.

The play can be divided into 3 parts. 1 part describes the quarrel between Laura and Gordon. 2 part - a treaty peace between the two mothers. 3 part - admission of mistakes and a happy end.

The author resorts to various stylistical devices to create the difference in the general atmosphere among the different parts of the play.

In the first part we deal with the quarrel in the family of a young couple. The atmosphere is tense. Gordon always points to her being wasteful. For example, by means of repetition (anadiplosis): "My Lord, it's no wonder we never have any money to spend if we chuck half of it in waste. Waste! Look at that piece of cheese and those potatoes" ...
